Buckets

The Buckets page helps you view and manage object storage buckets in the console.

What are Buckets?

Buckets are object storage containers provided by cloud providers. Each bucket holds files (objects) addressed by key, and is reachable over an S3-compatible endpoint. Buckets are provider-agnostic in the console so you can manage them the same way across clouds.

Buckets are backed by:

Note: DigitalOcean Spaces authenticates with an access key that is separate from the account’s main API credentials. DigitalOcean bucket operations use the Spaces access key attached to the account; they are refused until one is attached under Service credentials on the account’s details page. The key must have Full Access: a key limited to specific buckets cannot list or create buckets, so bucket operations are refused with it. Akamai Object Storage uses the account’s main credentials, which must grant Object Storage access; accounts connected through OAuth before buckets were supported need to be connected again.

View Buckets

The Buckets table lists all buckets from your registered cloud accounts, with their attributes displayed in table columns. Use pagination controls at the bottom of the page to navigate between pages if there are too many buckets to display.

When table data is being updated, table rows are displayed in italic, and table controls become inactive. It may take time to load the next portion of data.

To refresh the table, use the Reload 🔄 button.

To customize attributes displayed in the table, use the Layout ⠇ button.

When there are too many buckets available, use the Add filters 🔎 button to fine-tune your search. See the Resource Filter documentation for details.

Attributes

  • Name — name of the bucket. For S3-compatible providers the name is also the bucket’s unique identifier, and is unique within the provider’s namespace.
  • Endpoint — the S3-compatible service endpoint serving the bucket, used to address it directly.
  • Created — creation time of the bucket.
  • Region — cloud region the bucket lives in.
  • Account — cloud account which owns the bucket.

Add a Bucket

Use the Add ➕ button to create a new bucket. You will be asked for:

  • Account — the cloud account to create the bucket in. Requires read-write access.
  • Region — the region to create the bucket in.
  • Bucket name — must satisfy the provider’s naming rules: lowercase letters, digits, hyphens and dots, starting and ending with a letter or digit, and typically 3–63 characters.

Bucket names are commonly part of a globally shared namespace, so creation fails if the name is already taken.

Delete a Bucket

Select a bucket and use the Delete 🗑 button. Deleting a bucket requires the bucket to be empty.
